One of Porto Alegre’s Most Traditional and Diverse Neighborhoods

The Beat development, created by the real estate company Astir, is located in Cidade Baixa, one of the most traditional and culturally diverse neighborhoods in Porto Alegre. Renowned for its lively urban atmosphere, the district is filled with shops, cafés, bars, restaurants, and public squares that bring energy to the streets throughout the day and night.

This vibrant setting provides residents with easy access to leisure, services, and community life, making Cidade Baixa one of the city’s most desirable places to live. The project embraces the character of the neighborhood while contributing a contemporary architectural presence to its evolving urban landscape.

A Stepped Rooftop that Respects Historic Context

A key objective of the project was to establish a harmonious relationship between the new development and the surrounding buildings protected by the city’s historical heritage regulations. Rather than competing with its context, the design seeks a respectful balance between preservation and modernity.

The architectural volume aligns with neighboring facades, reinforcing the continuity of the streetscape. At the same time, the building’s rooftop is carefully stepped laterally, reducing its visual impact and allowing the new structure to integrate naturally into the historic urban fabric. This thoughtful approach enables contemporary architecture to coexist with the neighborhood’s architectural legacy while maintaining a distinct and forward-looking identity.

Comprising studio apartments and emphasizing a direct connection with neighboring buildings, on the facade, a grid of primary vertical and secondary horizontal planes guides the lateral stepping. Setback glazed panels form the front and rear faces of the building, fostering an open dialogue between public and private spaces.

Terraces, resulting from the volumetric adjustments, are dedicated to the condominium areas. These terraces stand out not only for their privileged views but also for crowning the project. The double-height ceiling in the event hall facilitates visual connections with the outdoor areas, giving prominence to this space.

Its Brutalist Character

The use of exposed concrete, prevalent in this work, was chosen for its neutrality in relation to the historical context and its lack of ornamentation. Its brutalist character serves as the project’s defining feature, creating a distinctive identity for the development.

建築材料生命週期評估如何影響環境與設計決策

    建築材料從開採到報廢的每個階段，都在累積能源與環境影響，也逐漸轉化為一種可被理解的Material as Narrative。     本文將從原料、製造、運輸、使用到回收五個階段，整理建築材料在生命週期中的環境影響。   作為自然資源消耗、能源使用與溫室氣體排放的重要來源，建築產業對環境有著顯著影響。目前全球約32%的能源消耗與34%的碳排放，皆與建築相關。在這樣的背景下，建築材料不再只是構成空間的元素，而逐漸成為評估環境影響的關鍵。透過循環經濟、可再生資源與技術創新等策略，材料被重新放回整個系統中檢視，其角色也從物質轉向過程，例如在Material as Narrative的脈絡中被重新理解。     生命週期評估（LCA）提供了一種系統化的方法，用以衡量與管理建築材料的環境影響。從原料開採、製造與運輸，到施工、使用與最終處理，每一階段都被納入分析範圍。這種方法不僅讓環境負擔變得可量化，也讓設計決策能在更早的階段被調整，特別是在Adaptive Reuse的情境中，更能看出材料選擇的長期影響。 在生命週期的不同階段中，投入與產出構成主要評估指標。投入包含能源、水資源與化石燃料的使用；產出則涵蓋碳排放、廢棄物與污染物的釋放。這些數據會進一步轉化為環境指標，如全球暖化潛能、水資源消耗、生態毒性與資源耗竭等，使不同材料在不同環境脈絡中得以比較，也與Architecture and Landscape的整體關係相互連動。     在國際層面，ISO 14040與14044標準提供生命週期評估的基本架構，將整體流程分為目標與範圍界定、清單分析、影響評估以及結果解讀四個階段。這些步驟彼此相互關聯，從定義研究目標開始，到量化數據與分析影響，逐步建立對材料環境表現的整體認知，也讓設計更能回應如Light and Space這類與環境條件相關的議題。

巴黎綠色都市復興傳說三部曲

ReGreeneration 以巴黎為起點，透過 15 分鐘城市、綠洲校園與性別敏感城市設計，重新描繪歐洲都市更新的未來藍圖。     巴黎一直是世界城市規劃的重要參考，但真正讓這座城市持續進化的，並非大型新建設，而是不斷重新定義既有公共空間的角色。作為 ReGreeneration 九座示範城市之一，巴黎透過 15 分鐘城市、性別敏感城市設計以及 Oasis Schoolyards 綠洲校園三項策略，將氣候調適、公共參與、生物多樣性與日常生活重新整合，示範了一套兼顧環境、社會公平與城市韌性的都市更新模式，也為全球高密度城市提供新的發展方向。     「綠色復興」ReGreeneration 是一個榮獲 Horizon Europe「地平線歐洲」資助的項目，意在透過基於自然的解決方案、參與式治理以及氣候適應和社會公平的綜合方法，在九個城市推進城市復興。該計劃涵蓋的九個城市類型各異，規模不同，規劃傳統也各有不同，共同構成了一個鮮活的實驗室，用於重新思考永續城市轉型在實踐中的應用。每個城市都為合作帶來了獨特的挑戰和願景，本系列文章將探討每個城市正在進行的工作，以及更廣泛的設計界可以從中汲取哪些經驗。 巴黎是本系列的第一座城市，也是歐洲人口密度最高、最適合步行的城市之一，擁有龐大且有效率的地鐵系統。然而，幾十年來，巴黎的城市規劃主要圍繞私家車展開，由此產生了許多後果，包括長期空氣污染、街道對行人和騎行者不友好，以及公共空間優先考慮車輛通行而非居民生活品質。巴黎擁有著名的建築遺產和歷史中心地帶的公共空間，但同時，其綠地面積遠低於歐洲目標，城市熱島效應隨著夏季的到來而加劇，內城區與郊區之間的差距凸顯了都市的不平等。     在過去十年間，巴黎市政府制定了一系列環環相扣的策略，意在透過對現有城市肌理進行耐心而有計劃的改造，來解決這些矛盾。本文將探討其中三個策略，每一項都與「綠化重塑」ReGreeneration 計劃的目標直接契合。第一項是「15分鐘城市」框架，巴黎市政府試圖透過該框架，圍繞鄰里關係、積極出行和分散式治理來改造社區生活。第二項是性別敏感型公共空間設計，巴黎市政府致力於確保其街道、公園和公共基礎設施能夠服務所有居民的多元化需求。第三項是將學校重新定義為兼具氣候和社會功能的雙重基礎設施，巴黎市政府由此在社區的日常地理環境中，找到了一個意想不到的城市綠化、社區活動和氣候適應場所網絡。
